"Lens hoods have a significant effect on image quality, especially when the light source, sun, flare, flash light, is in or near the field of view of the lens. Such penetrating side parasitic light softens the overall sharpness of the photograph and produces all sorts of ghosting. The lens hood is also important as a mechanical protection for the front of the lens against bumps and scratches."
