Canon RF 135mm f/1.8 L IS USM Lens Review
Expert Opinion
The Canon RF 135mm f/1.8 L IS USM full-frame lens is the natural successor to the Canon EF 135mm f/2 L USM. It has waited an impressive 26 years for its successor! Even then, the lens was very well regarded when compared to the lenses of 1996. This lens for the Canon RF bayonet will garner the same superlatives. The lens has a 1/3 EV brighter aperture and is optically truly brilliant. The 135mm also benefits from an optical stabilizer that exhibits an extraordinary stabilization effect of up to 5.5 EV steps, and using the built-in stabilizer (IBIS) of the Canon R mirrorless cameras, it achieves an effect of up to 8 EV.
If you're looking for an excellent portrait lens or you're shooting sports, weddings and other important events and the lens is not out of your budget, it should definitely not be missing from your kit. Quite frankly, lenses with similar specs from other manufacturers won't be around for a while. Canon is stomping all efforts at reverse engineering with lawsuits and threats from just about every lens manufacturer imaginable. So it will be a while (written 11/23/2022) before we see RF glass from Sigma or Tamron. As we are currently observing for many photographers, the switch from Canon DSLRs to mirrorless cameras is often the impetus for a complete switch to Sony or Panasonic. After all, the lens needs are different and those are not even covered by Canon with the best will, and the ability to use third party lenses is a significant value add for most photographers.
This doesn't change the fact that the Canon RF 135mm f/1.8 L IS USM lens is a really good lens and technically there is virtually nothing to fault it for. Of course, the sealing of the lens and its weather resistance are already a matter of course. The bokeh and sharpness at low apertures and all the optical prowess of this lens give it a pretty good chance that photographers will be seeing it for the next 26 years."
