Laowa 24mm f/14 2X (2:1) Macro Probe Lens for Arri PL Cine

Standard macro lenses tend to have a longer focal length, usually from 60 to 120 mm. A longer focus in the macro scene fills the entire field and the surrounding environment of the object is not captured at all, or only a small part. The Laowa 24mm lens allows you to aim the lens at close range, up to 2 cm from the end of the lens, while displaying a large amount of detail thanks to the ability to capture a wide angle and therefore makes the details in the background stand out well. Thanks to these unique features, you can take shots that you will never achieve with ordinary macro lenses.

A relatively common problem with macro photography is that small subjects are not large enough in the image when shooting with a standard 1: 1 macro lens, and the necessary details are not visible. Thanks to the 2: 1 display ratio, Laowa 24mm offers plenty of details that are often not visible to the naked eye, and you can capture them together with the surrounding environment.

Why 24mm?

Wide angle also means greater depth of field. The subject is close to the lens, the depth of field at this focus is greater than with conventional macro lenses, and the sharpness blends into the background behind the subject. The great depth of field in macro photography is an advantage when shooting in the studio as well as outdoors.

E.g. with the Laowa 24mm lens you can take a perfect macro, including capturing the surrounding environment in which the butterfly normally lives. However, a less blurred background looks more natural and better depicts the reality of the moment.

Strange design? 

If you wonder about the special appearance of the lens, it has its justification. Conventional macro lenses often do not allow you to approach and compose according to your ideas. Their focus and focusing distance are clearly defined. At the same time, there are situations and places that cannot be photographed in this way, or only with great difficulty, such as a frog hiding in the bushes deeper in the bushes. Laowa 24 mm is a lens about 40 cm long, which you can insert into the bushes or insert between the leaves and take completely different macro photographs. Just as the really small diameter of the lens doesn't look as unnatural to the photographed living creatures as it does when lying down in front of them with a standard macro lens equipped with a circular flash.

From the point of view of filmmaking, Laowa 24mm also offers incredible possibilities and you are always limited only by your creativity and imagination. Imagine being able to pass the lens between the candles on a birthday cake or half-empty bottles. There is currently no similar lens on the market that allows you to do this.

Proper light is also essential for macros, and with conventional macro lenses that have a lens diameter of usually over 60mm, shielding can occur due to their dimensions, where the light that should be on the photographed object ends up on the lens. Laowa 24 mm has a lens diameter of only 20 mm at its end, so you have virtually all the available light at your disposal.

And to make sure there is enough light, the lens is equipped with LEDs to illuminate the subject even in the darkest places and areas. The light is powered via the microUSB connector on the lens. 

The perfection of this lens is underlined by the fact that the front of the lens is waterproof. With the lens you can take photos in a glass of beer, in an aquarium, etc.
