The monopod is a replacement for a photographic tripod in environments where the use of a tripod is impossible or inappropriate for some reason. It is usually a collapsible telescopic rod with a tripod head attached to the top for mounting a camera. The bottom end is equipped with a rubber foot or a spike. Monopods are mainly used in sports photography, where a regular tripod could be a dangerous obstacle and handling it would be time-consuming for the photographer.
